What Actually Happens When You Switch Broadband Provider?

A lot of people put off switching broadband because they are not entirely sure what is going to happen. Here is what actually happens, clearly and in order.

What Happens When You SwitchSign up → Router arrives → Engineer visit if needed → Old service ends → New service live

Day 1: Signing up with your new provider

You choose a package and complete the sign-up process, usually online in about 10 minutes. Your new provider confirms your address, takes your payment details, and starts the transfer process. You receive a confirmation email and welcome pack within a day or two.

Days 2-7: Behind the scenes

Your new provider contacts Openreach or whichever network operator underpins your connection to arrange the transfer or new installation. They order your new router, which typically arrives a couple of days before your installation date.

Installation day

For a standard FTTC switch, activation is often remote. Your old providers equipment is deactivated and your new providers settings take over, typically within a few hours. For a new full fibre installation, an engineer visits your property, installs the ONT box and router, tests everything, and leaves you fully connected.

Your old connection

Under One Touch Switching, your new provider notifies your old one automatically. Your existing service typically remains live right up to the moment your new one activates. You do not usually need to call your old provider to cancel.
