Step 1: Connect it up
For FTTC broadband, use the cable that came with the router to connect it to your master phone socket, then plug in the power. For full fibre, your router connects to the ONT box, the white wall-mounted unit your engineer installed. Wait two to three minutes for the router to fully boot up and establish a connection.
Step 2: Connect a device and test
Find the WiFi name and password on the sticker on the bottom or back of your router. Connect your phone or laptop and check you can open a webpage.
Step 3: Change your WiFi password
Log into your routers admin panel, the address is on the sticker, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and set a new WiFi password that you will actually remember.
Step 4: Change the router admin password
The admin panel itself has a separate password, often just admin or password by factory default. Change it. Anyone who connects to your WiFi could access your router settings if the admin password is still the default.
Step 5: Position it properly
Central location, elevated off the floor, away from other electronics. This single change can dramatically improve WiFi coverage across your home.
Step 6: Check for firmware updates
Within the admin panel, look for a firmware update option. Keeping router firmware current patches security vulnerabilities.
