What a speed test actually measures
Download speed (Mbps): How quickly data travels from the internet to your device. This is the number providers advertise loudest.
Upload speed (Mbps): How quickly data travels from your device to the internet. Crucial for video calls, sending files, and cloud backups.
Latency or ping (ms): How long a signal takes to travel to a server and come back. Under 30ms is excellent; over 100ms causes noticeable lag.
Getting an accurate result
Use ethernet if possible. Plug directly into your router with a network cable. WiFi introduces variables that make broadband look slower than it is. Close all background applications first. Use Speedtest.net or Fast.com and run the test two or three times.
When to test
Test at different times of day. Evening peak hours, roughly 7pm to 10pm, often show slower speeds because more people in your area are online simultaneously.
Speed is lower than advertised
If results are significantly below what youre paying for after testing properly, contact your provider. A good provider will work with you to investigate the cause and aim to improve your speed — most slow connections can be fixed.
