The plain English version
SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. In practice, its FTTC broadband but delivered without requiring a separate traditional phone line alongside it. One order, just for your broadband, no line rental attached.
Why did this need to exist?
Until recently, FTTC broadband required you to also have a working BT phone line, even if you hadnt made a landline call in years. You still had to pay line rental, typically 10-20 pounds a month, just to keep the copper wire active. SoGEA removes that requirement entirely.
What speeds does SoGEA deliver?
The same as standard FTTC, up to around 80Mbps download in good conditions, with real-world speeds of 30-70Mbps depending on your distance from the cabinet. SoGEA is a commercial change, not a speed upgrade.
Is SoGEA the same as full fibre?
Definitely not. SoGEA is still copper-based for the final section from the cabinet to your home. Full fibre (FTTP) replaces that copper entirely. SoGEA removes the line rental cost but its not the same leap forward as switching to full fibre.
What about phone calls?
With SoGEA, calls are delivered over your broadband connection via VoIP. Most providers bundle this in, and you can usually keep your existing phone number through the porting process.
